The Giorgetto Giugiaro-styled hatchback started a whole era of stylish and sporty front-wheel drive cars.
Quality and fun could be had for a low price, and even open-top motoring.
The Golf set the standard for compact front wheel drive cars, and the cabriolet set the standard for open top compact cars.
The Cabriolet was first introduced to the public on February 27th, 1979, at the Geneva Motor Show, in June of that year production began.
The Beetle cabriolet was built alongside the Golf at the Karmann production facility, though the Beetle production ended in 1980.
The Golf was the first car in its class to have a permanently installed roll bar, and five-layer convertible roof.
The first series Cabriolet production continued with minimal changes until 1993, though in 1987, Volkswagen did give the car a more dynamic look with body colored side sills, wheel arch flares, and bumper covers.

It was sold at Stohlman Volkswagen in Vienna Virginia, and stayed in nearby Herndon Virginia with one owner its entire life.
It remains an extremely original example, showing just 86,000 documented miles.
It is finished in Alpine White with white cloth sport seats.
The car has optional cruise control, air conditioning, and power steering.
The car was driven by one owner from 1989 until 2015 when she was no longer able to drive.
It was parked in the garage until 2022 when the house went up for sale, when it was towed to a service facility.
A new battery was installed, as well as spark plugs, cap, rotor, fuel pump, fuel filter, left front axle, engine oil, and new tires.
After 8 years of hibernating, the car was on the road again.
Soon after, LBI acquired the car and decided to continue the reconditioning.
The car was sent to CSE in Oreland PA, a well known Volkswagen repair facility that has been wrenching and racing Volkswagen since the early 80s.
At CSE the shifter bushings were replaced, and the clutch was adjusted.
The exhaust was repaired, and the entire brake system was redone.
The timing belt, tensioner and drive belts were all replaced, as was the side motor mount, shocks, struts and more.
The car was then driven for a few hundred miles to test everything.
After which, the AC compressor was replaced, trunk struts, and a few other odds and ends.
As it sits today, this 1989 Volkswagen is a stunning example of an iconic classic that is becoming more and more sought after.
It would be difficult to find another in such original condition, with known history, and that has been so exhaustively serviced.
The car is a joy to drive, and would be a worthy addition to any collection, large or small.
